It's that time of year again. The war on Christmas has begun. Go ahead, google it... It will tell you there are about 202,000,000 results.
The very first link is a Wikipedia article about the Christmas Controversy.
The second link asks us to defend Christmas. (Read it!)
The third is an Amazon link to a book called The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought.
These are followed by a bunch of links to news sites, because let's face it, we all have to get a slice of that War-on-Christmas-Cake. Yum!
As every year I do not care what they call it. I don't mind if the cashier at New Seasons tells me to have a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holiday. Either way, I will assume they mean well. They could just say nothing instead, I suppose. But what does it matter? If someone wished me a Happy Hanukkah, I'd probably reply, "Right back at ya.".
I will ask once again, "Can't we all just get along?" My husband calls me an idealist. I'm proud to be one. In my ideal world I don't get rid of religion... I simply request a little more tolerance. Look around you... we all do the same thing this time of the year. We shop, we cook, we bake, we invite family or travel to see ours, we sing, we eat, we decorate trees. Is it really THAT important why each individual does all of these things? Are YOU really that important to claim the one real truth? Pulease! Get a grip! Be happy.
And hey, don't forget to donate a toy to a less fortunate child. I dare say, they will appreciate it for what it is... a gesture... and they won't care if you are Jewish, Christian, or *gasp* an Atheist!
Merry Christmas. :p
What about a Jewish Atheist?! ;)
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don't care what anyone wishes me. I see the feeling behind the words rather than the words. I do mind when the cashier gets all snotty and rude with me when I say Happy Holidays. That just ticks me off. And I've already donated a toy to Toys For Tots. It felt great...and I didn't do it for bonus points.
Yes, yes, yes!
ReplyDeleteGood to read your blog again.

Amen sister. As long as people are expressing goodwill, I don't care what language it's in or what religion it's coming from or not - it's the goodwill that matters. People getting snotty over what exact words are said just don't get the reason for the season.
